Program Reach

Two western Canadian provinces have made significant commitments to growing Seeds of Empathy over the next couple of years.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

British Columbia was the first jurisdiction to offer the Seeds of Empathy program. In May 2007, Minister of State for Child Care The Honourable Linda Reid announced an expansion of the program with 26 preschool, child care and Aboriginal early childhood development settings in 2007-08 and another 24 in 2008-09, funded through the Ministry of Children and Family Development. In 2009-10 there are 39 centres running the Seeds of Empathy program.

ALBERTA

Seeds of Empathy is funded by the Ministry of Employment and Immigration, as part of the Ministry's desire to support children who are new to Alberta and come with a different language or culture. In its first year, the Seeds of Empathy program was offered in 15 early childhood settings, and expanded to include 24 more centres in its second year. In 2009-10 Seeds of Empathy has expanded to another 25 centres. There are 60 centres running the program this year.
